Project Overview

Bowles and Wyer, expert landscape architects, approached Platipus and Holemasters with a challenging project – the re-landscaping of an existing terraced garden in Leighton Buzzard. The project involved the addition of new terraces retained by steel prefabricated units. To enable the construction, a significant 60° cut into the existing slope was required, which posed a potential risk to global slope stability. Maintaining the integrity of the slope during and after construction was critical.

After four anchor suitability tests were completed, an Indemnified Design was created covering the anchoring of the slope and new wall. The proposed works involved re-profiling and anchoring the slope, and constructing a new tied retaining wall. Platipus Percussion Driven Earth Anchors (PDEA®) with stainless steel threaded bar and top fittings were specified to maintain the stability of the steepened slope during the temporary phase and to provide support to the wall in the permanent phase. Installation of Platipus ground anchors had to be completed prior to excavation and temporary works, which were completed in 2.4m wide panels, each needing support before excavating the adjacent panel. The line of the threaded bar from each anchoring system was then extended to secure the new wall. This process ensured that the anchoring systems were seamlessly integrated with the structural components of the new terraces, providing a robust and permanent solution.

The old deck was demolished and a degree of stabilisation was required for the abutments once the new deck was in position
