Platipus Percussion Driven Earth Anchors (PDEA®) are an effective solution for both temporary and permanent works, providing immediate stabilisation for areas to be excavated with quantifiable loads for each anchor. This allows construction to proceed safely below the excavated area, in this case allowing pipe jacking and headwall work to be carried out to refurbish a culvert 10m beneath a railway line.
To allow teams access to the collapsing culvert, a 6.5m high 60° anchored cut face slope was required. During the anchor suitability testing, on-site training was conducted, allowing the live installation to take place without delay.
Using a tracked excavator 67 Platipus Anchors were driven to a 7m depth, with mesh reinforcement and timber solders to spread the load from the anchors. Once works had been completed to refurbish the culvert and headwalls, the anchors were de-stressed, the mesh reinforcement removed, and the slope reinstated.
